Ellen Weaver, CACIL Executive DirectorMost people equate disability with limitations. But it's our job to change the perceptions and realities that prevent people with disabilities from sharing in the community. We provide training, mentoring, and referrals to help people with disabilities and their families live productive lives. Because disability touches so many people, we also work on a larger scale, helping government and businesses make changes that benefit not just those with disabilities, but everyone in the community.

What We Do

Changing lives. What kind of opportunities should a person with disabilities have? All of them. We believe every person has something valuable to contribute to the community. That's why every year, we help over 2,500 individuals with disabilities and their families find the resources, support, and motivation they need to start leading fuller, more productive lives.

Changing perceptions. Altering the way people look at the world can be a powerful force, and one we're happy to wield. For example, our Independent Living specialists work with individuals to recognize opportunities and set achievable personal goals. We also take steps to open minds, educating the ppublic that disability is normal and everyone should have the chance to participate, contribute, and belong.

Changing communities. People with disabilities aren't the only ones who benefit from system-wide improvements. After all, any change that improves safety or convenience is good for people of all abilities, from parents with strollers to those using wheelchairs. What's more, welcoming people with disabilities into our workplaces, libraries, stores, restaurants, and transportation systems creates a richer, more diverse atmosphere that's good for the entire community.

Ellen Weaver, CACIL Executive Director

"The independent living approach is to seek ways of enhancing and making the best possible use of individual capacities and community resources. As the disability rights slogan says, 'Nothing about us, without us.'" - Ellen Weaver, CACIL Executive Director
