A peer counselor is a knowledgable and experienced guide, a trusted ally and advocate and a caring role model. Here at CACIL, your peer counselor will have 30 years experience living successfully with a disability and a professional counseling degree. - Carla Lasater-Gunid MA, Independent Living Coordinator
Peer support is the opportunity to connect with another person with a disability. It is an enhanced level of understanding; providing emotional support and information. Research supports this model; reflecting the use of peer support often improves symptoms, coping and social functioning; and thereby decreasing unnecessary use of medical resources.
CACIL provides Peer Support opportunities in both individual and group settings. Disability management counseling is available with a Rehabilitation Counselor. Our CACIL Academy 101 program offers a range of activities which promotes the opportunities to be informal mentors and supports for others. CACIL Academy activities are also geared towards self-awareness, self-improvement and job readiness.
